Repair Rate and Associated Costs of Reusable fURS

A systematic review and meta-analysis1

This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to estimate the repair rate of reusable flexible ureteroscopes and the average repair cost per ureteroscopy.

Key findings

  • First study of its kind to estimate the average rate and cost of breakage for ureteroscopes
  • Results showed that ureteroscopes need to be repaired once in every 15 procedures on average
  • With an average repair cost of 6808 USD, this corresponds to 441 USD per procedure

Clinical Evidence

Key peer-reviewed studies on repair rate, cancellations, clinical outcomes of single-use and reusable flexible ureteroscopes (fURS)

Impact of reusable vs. single-use fURS on procedure cancellations

A comparative study showed that unavailability due to breakdown or repair of flexible ureteroscopes accounts for 55% of all cancellations and switching to single-use devices could help reduce the procedure cancellation rate (Al-Balushi et al., 2019).

Clinical outcomes and costs of reusable and single-use fURS

A study showed equal clinical effectiveness between reusable and single-use fURS, with partially overlapping cost ranges (Mager et al., 2018).

Comparison Between Single-Use and Reusable fURS for Upper Urinary Calculi

A systematic review and meta-analysis demonstrated that single-use fURS have similar effectiveness and better security for treating upper urinary calculi compared to reusable fURS (Meng et al., 2021).

The world's first ureteroscope with bioplastic material in the handle

The bioplastic material used in the handle of aScope 5 Uretero is sourced from a mix of fossil based and bio-based material, which:

Is made from by-products and waste, such as used cooking oil

Doesn't compete with food and agriculture production

Reduces the carbon impact of the ABS plastics used for the production of our ureteroscope handles by 70%*

*The bioplastic material (in this case bio-ABS) used in our endoscope handle emits 70% less carbon than traditional fossil-based ABS plastic (based on cradle-to-gate LCA from manufacturer). Note that this reduction refers to the ABS plastic in the handle and not the full endoscope.
