RASeCAL Training

A Randomized controlled trial to Assess the Safety and Efficiency of a self-Contained sampling device /disposable bronchoscope system versus usual sAmpLing procedure? RASeCAL

RASeCAL is a multicentre RCT to evaluate if the Ambu® aScope 4 Broncho Sampler Set can improve standards of care during bronchoscopy in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). The safety and efficiency of the Ambu® aScope 4 Broncho Sampler Set versus usual standard sampling practice with single-use bronchoscopes (Ambu® aScope4 Broncho) will be investigated during bronchoalveolar fluid (BAL) collection in patients undergoing mechanical ventilation on the ICU.

This RCT is designed to test whether the Ambu® aScope 4 Broncho Sampler will reduce the frequency of circuit breaks/spray-or-spill (safety measures) and improve efficiency (% retrieved volume of sample, reduced loss of sample, ease of set up and use, connectability of sampling containers, and handling of samples during the procedure) versus standard sampling containers using Ambu® aScope4 Broncho on patients in the ICU. An observational study1 has recently suggested its value in this regard. If these benefits are demonstrable within an RCT, then this may change practice recommendations in this setting.
